Safety policy
How LGBTQ Prime protects the people and businesses it lists, especially where being LGBTQ is dangerous.
LGBTQ Prime is not a generic directory. A map of queer bars, saunas, and community centers is useful to the people looking for them, and it can be useful to people who want to hurt them. This policy explains the rules we follow so that the directory helps the first group and not the second. If something here is unclear, or you think we got it wrong, write to us. We would rather hear it early.
Where being LGBTQ is dangerous, listing is opt-in
In countries where same-sex relationships are criminalized, or where venues and organizers are targeted, we do not publish a place just because it appears in an open dataset or someone submitted it. A listing in those countries appears only when:
- the business or organization itself asks to be listed, and we have confirmed the request came from them, or
- the venue is internationally known and already publicizes itself openly under its own name.
Everything else stays unpublished, even if the information is public somewhere else. We keep the list of these countries under review and check it against the current ILGA World data. Pride events in those countries are not promoted on the world Pride calendar unless the organizers ask for it.
Same-day takedown
If a listing, photo, event, or review puts you, your staff, or your guests at risk, ask us to take it down. You do not need an account, and you do not need to prove who you are to have a listing hidden while we look into it.
- Use the safety takedown form. It asks only for the page and a way to reach you, if you want a reply.
- We aim to hide the content the same day, and within 24 hours at the latest.
- Safety takedowns skip the normal moderation queue. We ask questions afterwards, not before.
If you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services or a trusted local LGBTQ organization first. We cannot help in an emergency.
Reviews are pseudonymous
Reviews show a display name you choose, never your real name or email address. We do not show which reviews belong to the same person across cities, and owners cannot see who wrote a review. We keep what we need to fight fake reviews and spam (see the privacy policy), and we never hand it to listed businesses.
No check-ins, no visit histories, no tracking
- There are no public check-ins and no "who was here" lists. Nobody can see where you have been.
- The "Near me" button asks your browser for your position once, uses it for that single search, and does not store it. You can always type a city instead.
- We do not track your precise location in the background, and we do not build location histories.
- Favorites and lists you save are private to your account.
What we ask of businesses and contributors
- Do not add private homes, private parties, or people's personal addresses.
- Do not tag a person, or a place's staff, as LGBTQ. Tags describe who a place serves, not who someone is.
- Do not post photos where guests can be identified unless they agreed to it.
- Do not add cruising areas that are not already publicly known and signposted as such.
Content that breaks these rules is removed under the content standards.
Changes to this policy
We will update this page as we learn, and note the date at the top. Changes that make the rules less protective will be announced on the site before they take effect.
